Prof Majid Samii,
WFNS Ambassador for Africa Pioneer of the Africa 100 Projecthttp://www.caans.ne/News_from_the_secre ... ERIA1.html
In 2 November 2012 and with initiative of Professor Madjid Samii, the inauguration ceremony of “Africa 100” project with official sponsorship of Volkswagen Company and with wide coverage of mass media took place in Auto city of Wolfsburg, Germany. Participation of prominent scientific, cultural and political faces from Germany and other countries like Professor Dr Horst Köhler, the former president of Germany, and ambassadors of several African countries was a sign of special importance of this project in Germany and also in the international level and the vast coverage of the event and dedication of special pages in German major newspapers is a confirmation to that.
The main motivation for design and implementation of the “Africa 100” project by Professor Madjid Samii is continuous support of medical education in Africa and especially in the field of neurosurgery. According the official statistics, the annual rate of death due to head trauma caused by road accidents in Africa is three-times more than the AIDS disease. One of the main reasons for this problem is a lack of neurosurgeons in this continent for taking care of such patients. Based on statistics, in western countries there is one neurosurgeon for taking care of 200,000 populations, while in Africa this figure is only one neurosurgeon for every 5,000,000 populations.
regarding the enormous efforts and achievements of professor Madjid Samii as the president of the WFNS in development and improvement of neurosurgery in Africa and other underdevelopment countries all over the world, he was assigned as the ambassador for Africa by the WFNS in 2011 and Africa 100 project is among his first efforts in this position.
The aim of implementing the “Africa 100 project” is education of 100 young African physicians especially from east, center and west Africa in the field of neurosurgery for a whole period of 6 years. Although the specifications of this project makes it not only an exemplary instance in the field of neurosurgery, but also in the other educational projects in medical and nonmedical fields in Africa and other undeveloped regions of the world. In this project, 100 elite young Africans in the field of medicine, against the current trend of brain drain will return to their countries after education in a native environment and will base a foundation for medical science as well as a new culture of education in their home countries. Continuation of such culture will lead to development of a generation of neurosurgeons and hundreds native specialists in a short future in Africa which its root goes back to “Africa 100”.
For implementation of this project several educators and professors from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and South Africa will take the responsibility of education. The education is based on the fact that candidates should be educated by African mentors in an African environment, which they should work afterwards in that, to be able to face the problems and solve them and also be able to base a foundation for neurosurgery in Africa. A number of elite students from these candidates will also spend short courses in the International Neuroscience Institute in Hannover to learn the latest and most effective treatment methods and see the most recent developments in neurosurgery and neuroscience.
To overcome the lack of operation equipments, a method that was developed by Professor Madjid Samii for education of neurosurgeons in Rabat in the past would be implemented. According the agreement with a famous neurosurgical equipments’ manufacturer, all the required tools for performing all the neurosurgical operations, which its normal price would be 30,000 Euros, would be provided with a price of 3,000 Euros to the centers and physicians.
The total expenses for education of each candidate in this project after consultation with universities, hospitals and organizations is estimated to be 10 thousands Euros annually and regarding the total length of neurosurgical education which is 6 years, the total expenses for education of each candidate would be 60,000 euros. This amount is totally provided by prominent German and international personalities and organization and each person or organization, as an ambassador of “Africa 100”, would support the specialty education of one or several young African physicians. For the annual expenses and also the total expenditure a certificate would be issued for development of science in neurosurgery from the executive organization.http://www.professormadjidsamii.com/en/africa-100
